Al Shamal defeated reigning champions Al Sadd 2-1 in Week 6 of the 2022-2023 season QNB Stars League at the Al Sadd Stadium on Tuesday.

Al Sadd had advanced in the seventh minute through Andre Ayew, but Al Shamal struck back through Amjad Atwan (20th minute penalty) and Ali Alwan (34th minute) to script a famous victory.

Al Shamal raised their score to nine points, while Al Sadd remained on seven points.

Al Shamal were eager to find their winning ways after their last two defeats (to Al Arabi and Qatar SC) and they did just that.

Al Sadd took the lead through Ayew after Guillerme Torres’ pass was controlled by Baghdad Bounedjah before he passed it to an unmarked Ayew to score.

Atwan helped Al Shamal draw parity when the referee awarded a penalty for Al Sadd’s Jung Woo-Young’s foul on Alwan and the latter found the target from the spot.

Al Shamal then showed supremacy and got more than one chance through Yacine Bammou and Alwan, who both failed to find the mark.

Al Shamal’s Alwan then got into the scoring act off a cross from the right by Bammou.

The start of the second half saw Al Sadd  make attempts to equalize and Al Shamal resort to counter-attacks.

Al Sadd almost scored an equalizer in the 67th minute, but Guillerme’s powerful shot from the left hit the left post.

Al Sadd managed to score a goal towards the end, but it was cancelled via VAR decision.
