history
Al Gharafa were formed in 1979, after local residents decided to create a sports club to serve the youth population in the area. Al Ittihad Club was established in June that year.
The side’s name was changed to Al Gharafa in 2004 to represent the local area. Nicknamed The Cheetahs, they have had much success down the years, the highlights of which being the three consecutive Qatar League titles between 2008 and 2010.
Al Gharafa, who won the Arab Clubs Championship in 1999, had H.E. Sheikh Khalifa bin Fahad bin Mohammed Al Thani as the first chairman of their Board of Directors.

Date of Birth:17/07/1970
Pedro Martins took over as coach of Al Gharafa from Italian Andrea Stramaccioni. The Portuguese is one of the distinguished coaches, having achieved success with a number of clubs.
Martins, born in 1970, played as a professional player for six Portuguese clubs in 17 seasons, most notably Sporting Lisbon whom he represented for three years.
He has coached some Portuguese teams, including Maritimo, Rio Ave and Vitoria Guimaraes.
Martins moved to Al Gharafa from Greek club Olympiacos, where he coached between 2018 and 2022.
With Olympiacos, he had won three league titles and the Greek Cup.
