New Qatar SC head coach Gabriel Calderón, is confident that his side can beat the drop and survive on their return to the QNB Stars League. The vastly experience Argentine coach spoke with QSL online during the recent media day ahead of the start of the season, which kicks off on Friday evening.

Opening up the conversation and Calderón was clear to outline that safety was the priority for his team. “Qatar SC have returned to the league, the first target is to stay in the league this year.”

“I am taking the season game by game, we have to play for each other and with humility and if we head into each game with this spirt anything is possible for Qatar Sports Club this season.” added the veteran coach, who boasts an enviable coaching CV, including guiding Saudi Arabia to the 2006 World Cup.

Calderón is no stranger to the GCC, and revealed he is relishing the challenge of managing for the first time in Qatar. “This is my fifth country I have coached in the region and I know the mentality here in Qatar is similar. This is a new challenge and I’m looking forward to getting started with Qatar SC.”

“The challenge is difficult for us, returning to the league and making an impact. But this is what drew me to the club, I have come to challenge myself and get Qatar SC back to where they belong” noted the Argentinian coach.

Ending the interview, Calderón stressed that the Kings will have to work together to reach their goal of QNB Stars League survival. “For me, I want to focus on the team not the individuals. The spirit of the team is good, and god willing we will do well. Our first aim is to survive in the league and then move from this point, but I have confidence in myself and my team to do well.” Qatar SC start of their campaign with a tough away match against newly formed Al Duhail.
