Al Shahania shocked Al Ahli in an entertaining 2-2 draw in Week 7 of the 2019-20 QNB Stars League at the Al Ahli Stadium on Saturday.
Hernan Perez (six minute) and Nabil El Zhar (44th-minute penalty) scored for Al Ahli, while Al Shahania’s both goals were scored by Ramin Rezaein in the fourth and 82nd (penalty) minutes.
Going into the match as favourites, Al Ahli had to deal with the setback of conceding an early goal as the visitors were rewarded for their early endeavour. Winning a corner on the right, Nigel de Jong swung in a cross which was met by a standing header from Ramin, who planted the ball into the back of the net via the underside of the crossbar.
The shock spirited a quick response and Al Ahli were level in no time as Hernan was on hand to drill home a Mohamad Al Abbasi cross following a nice interchange with Abdullah Al Ahrak on the left hand side of the field.
What followed next was a barrage by The Brigadiers as they pushed to take the lead and get the better of the hesitancy in Al Shahania’s defence. They had three goals ruled out, while also striking the post twice, with Mohamed Diame particularly unfortunate.
Al Ahli did finally get their noses in front at the end of first half when De Jong was adjudged to have handled the ball in the area. Nabil stepped up to score the penalty with a shot to Ebraim Mordou’s right.
Al Shahania had their chances and a combination of Ramin and Ali Ferydoon had looked particularly potent, with the latter providing the former with plenty of good opportunities to score from the right.
Their hard work was rewarded when they won a penalty in the closing stages of the match. Ramin stepped up to coolly send the keeper the wrong way and earn his side a valuable point.
The result saw Al Ahli move onto 10 points, while Al Shahania remain at the bottom of QNB Stars League table with two points.
