Ali Al Amri turned out to be the hero as Al Gharafa stormed into the quarterfinals from Group B of the 2019-20 Ooredoo Cup by defeating Al Sailiya 2-1 in their Round 5 match at the Al Wakrah Stadium on Saturday.
Al Amri struck in the seventh and 82nd minutes to take reigning champions Al Gharafa on to five points and fourth place.
Abdullah Al Anzi scored Al Sailiya’s goal in the 46th minute.
Al Khor, Qatar SC and Al Arabi had earlier progressed to the quarterfinals from Group B.
Going into the game, Al Sailiya were out of contention for a quarterfinal berth as they were lying at the bottom of the table with just a point that they collected from their 2-2 draw with Al Duhail in the third round.
The Peregrines had lost 0-4 to Qatar SC, 1-2 to Al Arabi and 1-2 to Al Khor in the last round.
On the other hand, Al Gharafa had a chance to become the fourth team to make it to the knockout quarterfinals. And they did it after rivals Al Duhail were held 2-2 by Al Arabi in the day’s another kick-off and the former finished their campaign on three points.
Al Gharafa drew 2-2 with Al Duhail and 1-1 with Al Arabi. The Cheetahs lost their games against Qatar SC (0-3) and Al Khor (1-3).
