Al Ahli bounced back to beat Al Shahania 2-1 in Round 4 (Group A) of the 2019-20 Ooredoo Cup at the Al Wakrah Stadium on Sunday.
After a goalless opening session, Al Shahania went ahead through Nigel de Jong, who converted a penalty in the 63rd minute.
Al Ahli were not to be bowed and fought with renewed vigour. The Brigadiers equalised in the 88th minute through Majed Mohammed and then struck a vital blow on their rivals through prolific striker Abel Mathias in stoppage time (90+1).
Al Ahli took their points tally to nine, whereas Al Shahania remained on one point, that they earned from their goalless draw with Al Wakrah.
Al Shahania lost 0-3 to Al Rayyan and 1-3 to Al Sadd in their other matches.
Al Ahli defeated Umm Salal 2-0 and Al Sadd 4-3, but suffered a 1-4 defeat at the hands of Al Rayyan.
Stung by the deficit, Al Ahli fought hard for the equaliser and they were rewarded for their efforts with a late winning goal as well.
Both sides fielded players except those who were on national duty and on the injury list.
