Umm Salal pulled off a majestic comeback as they came from behind to draw 2-2 against Al Rayyan in Round 3 (Group A) of the 2019-20 Ooredoo Cup at the Al Khor Stadium on Saturday.
The goals were scored by Gabriel Mercado (31st minute) and Rodrigo Tabata (58th-minute penalty) for Al Rayyan.
Umm Salal scored late on through Yannick Sagbo in the 90th minute and Murad Naji (90+3).
Al Rayyan were the form side going into the game and they quickly imposed themselves on the opposition, coming close on two occasions through a Sebastian Soria volley and Tabata shot from distance.
They did make the breakthrough from a typical set piece as Tabata swung in a corner which was flicked on by Dami Traore and touched home at the back post by Mercado.
Al Rayyan doubled their lead in the second half when they were awarded a spot-kick after Ali Mohammed brought down Soria in the penalty area. The defender was given his marching orders for the foul and Tabata converted the penalty to put his side in the driving seat.
The numerical disadvantage was not going to hold back The Orange Fortress as they valiantly fought their way back into the game. The warning signs were there for Al Rayyan when Victor Vazquez hit the woodwork and Saleh Ahmed saw his shot being saved when through on goal.
The pressure mounted and Umm Salal were awarded a penalty, in the last minute of regular time, which Sagbo struck with aplomb. With only seconds remaining on the clock, Naji swung in a free-kick from the left which evaded everybody in the box and the ball nestled into the far corner to seal a dramatic comeback.
The result saw Umm Salal move to two points, with Al Rayyan sitting comfortably on seven points.
