Al Wakrah are set to face the UAE’s Al Wahda in the Challenge Cup of Qatar-UAE Super Cup at the Al Nahyan Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Sunday, January 19, 2025, marking the conclusion of Qatari clubs’ participation in the tournament’s second edition. The kick-off is at 7pm.
Al Wakrah aim to secure the title for the first time. However, they will encounter stiff competition as Al Wahda share the same ambition.
Al Wakrah qualified for this tournament by winning the Qatar Cup 2024.
The Blue Wave enter this match following a disappointing 3-6 defeat to Al Ahli in Week 12 of the Ooredoo Stars League. This championship holds significant importance for them as they seek to rectify their recent performance and bring joy to their supporters.
Poya Asbaghi, the newly-appointed coach of Al Wakrah, will have the chance to claim his first title with the team, after taking charge just last week, against Al Wahda.
Al Wakrah are relying on their formidable attacking lineup, featuring Jacinto Dala, Ricardo Gomes and Ayoub Assal to secure a victory and clinch the title, despite the match being held away from home.
Conversely, Al Wahda find themselves in a similar situation regarding recent results. Due to a decline in performance, the management appointed Slovenian Darko Milanic as the new coach until the end of the season, replacing Norwegian Ronnie Deila, who was dismissed after the 10th round of UAE Professional League.
Al Wahda will depend on their exceptional goalkeeper Rashid Ali to thwart Al Wakrah’s offensive threats, alongside a roster of talented players, particularly in the attacking department led by outstanding Syrian star Omar Khribin. The team also boasts other notable players, including Sasa Ivkovic, Bernardo Folha and Brahima Diarra.
