Al Arabi made it two wins in as many matches as they defeated Al Wakrah 2-0 in Round 2 (Group A) of the 2023-2024 season Ooredoo Cup at the Suhaim Bin Hamad Stadium of Qatar Sports Club on Sunday.
Substitutes Mohamed Taabouni (47th minute) and Shadi Ramzi (90+3 minute) got on the scoresheet for Al Arabi.
With the result, Al Arabi have garnered the maximum six points from the two matches played, having beaten Muaither 2-1 in the first round, while Al Wakrah, who lost to Umm Salal by a 0-5 margin in their first fixture, remained without any point.
After back-and-forth moments with not much impressive action from both sides, Al Arabi’s Ahmad Moein got the crowd on their feet in the 31st minute with his darting run down the right flank of Al Wakrah's defence, but his crossing shot was saved by goalkeeper Mohammed Al Bakri.
In the 42nd minute, Al Wakrah’s Rabeh Yahia Boussafi made an overlap from midfield, evading three of Al Arabi’s players before releasing a shot from 30 yards that went a few inches wide to the right of goalkeeper Jassim Al Hail’s goal.
The match remained a ding-dong affair, with the resistance of both sides remaining unbroken going into the dugout at half-time.
Taabouni came in to replace Rami Suhail Ali at half-time and he made an instant impact as he opened the scoring for Al Arabi in the 47th minute with an angular shot that keeper Al Bakri could not provide an answer to.
The goal seemed to have awakened a hunger in Al Wakrah as they sought a much-needed equalizer with passion and grit, but all to no avail.
Shadi Ramzi entered the fray in the 86th minute for Al Arabi, replacing an injured Ibrahim Nasser Kalla, and the Under-21 player got The Dream Team their second goal of the night in three minutes of added time, following Abdullah Al Sulaiti’s sublime pass, to consolidate their win on the night.
