The 2020 Workers’ Cup kicked off on Friday, 28th February, with 10 matches being played across five groups.

First held in 2013, the Workers’ Cup is organised by the Qatar Stars League and sponsored by Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy.

As well as engaging workers through the beautiful game, the tournament aims to spark interest in the FIFA World Cup 2022 and widen access to football.

Many of the competing 20 teams have players working on FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 projects.

The eighth edition of the tournament is a special experience for the teams, as they are playing at the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup training sites cluster at Qatar University. The players are following in the footsteps of numerous international teams, including Algeria, Iran, Oman and India, who used the facility as a training base last year.

The day’s biggest victory came in the Group E clash between regulars Mowasalat and debutants Smeet, with the former winning by a huge 13-1 margin.

Arguably the most exciting game was in Group D, as Teyseer Services Company came back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Al Sraiya Security Services. Teyseer’s dramatic equaliser came at the very end of the second half.
