Al Rayyan edged Al Khor 7-6 in sudden death in the last quarterfinal of 2019-20 Ooredoo Cup at the Qatar SC Stadium on Saturday.

Al Rayyan will play Al Arabi in the semifinal.

Tiago Bezerra scored in the 56th minute for Al Khor. The lead was neutralised by Al Rayyan’s Rodrigo Tabata in the 74th minute through a penalty.

Sudden death came into play after the regular time ended 1-1 and tie-breaker ended 5-5.

Khaled Muftah, Ibrahim Masoud, Ahmed Abdelmaqsoud, Lee Jae-Ik and Rodrigo Tabata scored for Al Rayyan in the tie-breaker. Afterwards, Abdulrahman Al Korbi and Mekki Tombari found the target for The Lions in sudden death.

For Al Khor, Said Brahimi, Musaab Abdulmajid, Lucca Borges, Ahmed Salem and Ahmed Al Mohannadi were on target in the tie-breaker. Mohammed Al Jabri too was lucky with his kick in sudden death, but Abdulrahman Rajab’s shot was blocked by Al Rayyan goalkeeper Saoud Al Hajri with his leg.

Earlier, Tiago led the charge as Al Khor came hard on Al Rayyan, whose star player Yohan Boli (new recruit), Yacine Brahimi and Franck Kom were missing in action.

Tiago was unlucky to have struck his powerful shot against the horizontal in the 25th minute following a brilliant piece of footwork.

Al Khor’s January signing Lucca Borges, who played for Al Rayyan last season, missed a sitter by skiing the ball with only the goalkeeper in front.

Tiago drew a fine save from Al Hajri as the first half, during which only Sultan Al Kuwari came closest to scoring for Al Rayyan, drew to a close.

On to the second session and a goal by Al Khor was in the offing. It was scored in the 56th minute by none other than Tiago, who gave finishing touches to the spadework done by first Lucca through a through pass and then Hammoudan through a cross from the left.

Al Rayyan pressed hard and the equaliser came in the form of a penalty, awarded by referee Khamis Al Kuwari after referring to VAR. Al Khor’s Atef Mohammed committed the foul on Abdulaziz Hazza.

Khaled Muftah then had a chance to put Al Rayyan ahead, but he shot over.

Al Khor made it to the knockout stage of Ooredoo Cup in style, topping Group B with 13 points, whereas Al Rayyan made the cut after ending up fourth in Group A.
