Round nine of the QSL season saw plenty of action at the top of the QSL standings. Here in our regular feature talking points, QSL online picks out the stories that matter from the weekend’s action.

Al Rayyan stumbled to their first defeat of the season after being edged out 3-2 in the QSL match of the week against Al Gharafa. Pedro Caixina’s side struck a deserved winner on the 88th minute thanks to a well taken Vladimir Weiss strike. The result will certainly pain Rayyan boss Michael Laudrup who previously worked with Weiss whilst at Lekhwiya.

The reigning champions will have to quickly shake off the defeat and focus on their Qatar Clasico tie against Al Sadd. Defeat against bitter rivals Sadd could see Al Rayyan’s title bid in tatters.

At the top of the table, El Jaish registered a narrow 1-0 win over Al Ahli on Friday evening. Sabri Lamouchi’s side didn’t exactly play to their full potential during the game have defender Lucas Mendes to thank after hitting a fine free kick with five minutes left to play.

Despite not being at their best, Jaish still managed to come away from Al Ahli stadium with all three points. The soldiers will be hoping for a better performance when they take on second placed Lekhwiya in the QSL spotlight match on Tuesday evening.

For the second week in a row Al Shahania left it late to register a point this time against a struggling Al Kharaitiyat side. Thunders fans must of thought that they had registered their second win of the season when DR Congo striker Jeremy Bokila bundled in from close range with minutes left to play.

However yet again Jose Fernando’s side showed plenty of spirit and fight to find an equalizer from the penalty spot on the 94th minute. The draw pushed the Oryxes up into seventh place and three points away from the relegation zone. Jose Fernando will be targeting a statement against a struggling Al Arabi side in round ten.
