Al Wakrah beat Al Sailiya 2-1 in Week 17 of the 2021-2022 season QNB Stars League at the Al Ahli Stadium on Saturday.
Jacinto Dala (33rd minute) and Mohamed Benyettou (35th minute) scored for Al Wakrah, while Al Sailiya’s goal was scored by Driss Fettouhi (45+2 minutes) off a penalty kick.
Al Wakrah raised their points to 31 with their ninth victory, while Al Sailiya remained on seven points after they endured their 12th defeat.
The match witnessed a missed penalty by Benyettou and a red card for his team-mate and defender Mohammed Ayyash in the 43rd minute.
Marquez Lopez-coached Al Wakrah have been in good form of late and are placed third. They had made it big in Week 16 with a 4-0 win over strong title contenders Al Duhail in Week 16.
However, The Blue Wave, had crashed to a 0-6 defeat to holders Al Sadd in their postponed match from Week 11 on 31st January. The victory over Al Sailiya this time around has helped them to be well on course for a top-four finish and should further boost their players’ morale.
Al Wakrah had beaten Al Sailiya 1-0 in the first leg.
Al Wakrah shot ahead after half an hour through Dala, who finished off an attack that also involved Omid Ebrahimi.
The goal spurred Al Wakrah players on and they pressed hard for a second goal, and Benyettou managed to get it soon afterwards in a superb manner.
Al Wakrah suffered a blow when Ayyash was shown the marching orders close to the half-time whistle.
Fettouhi managed to reduce the margin for Al Sailiya after he converted a penalty, beating goalkeeper Saoud Al Khater.
Al Sailiya tried to take advantage of the numerical advantage and intensified the pressure by attacking through the flanks.
Meanwhile, Al Wakrah missed the opportunity to score the third goal, but Benyettou missed a penalty kick as Al Sailiya goalkeeper Claude Amine thwarted him.
Even as Al Sailiya tried hard for a second goal, Al Wakrah held on to their slender lead to script another crucial victory.
