Al Rayyan defeated Al Wakrah 2-1 in Round 8 (Group A) of the 2021-2022 season Ooredoo Cup at the Al Wakrah Stadium on Sunday.
Jacinto Dala put Al Wakrah ahead in the 44th minute, but Al Rayyan hit back through goals from Yohan Boli (51st minute) and Franck Kom (83rd minute).
Al Rayyan moved on to nine points from six matches, while Al Wakrah stood on 15 points from seven games.
Al Wakrah dominated the proceedings from start.
The Al Rayyan goal had a close call as early as the fourth minute when Abdulghani Muneer’s shot was saved at the goalline by Al Rayyan’s Ali Karami.
Al Wakrah were on the move and Mohamed Benyettou shot straight to goalkeeper Saoud Al Hajri in the 10th minute and, a couple of minutes later, defender Lucas Mendes narrowly headed over a corner kick.
That was followed by Saoud Al Nasr’s shot that went wide.
Al Rayyan’s first attempt at the goal came in the 20th minute, but Franck Kom’s long-range shot, off a counter-attack, was tipped over the bar by goalkeeper Saoud Al Khater, conceding a corner.
Al Wakrah’s persistent efforts paid off when they deservedly went ahead through Dala, who placed home a corner kick.
Al Rayyan had a goal disallowed for offside in first-half injury time following a free-kick taken by Boli.
Al Rayyan had by now settled into their stride. They sustained the momentum into the second half and managed to equalize through Boli.
After Benyettou skied a shot in the 69th minute, Al Rayyan gained an upper hand in the game.
Meanwhile, Al Wakrah’s Omid Ebrahimi clipped the underside of the bar with a long shot in the 77th minute.
Al Rayyan went 2-1 up before long through Kom and the goal sealed them full points.
