El Jaish qualified to the quarter finals of the AFC Champions League for the first time in their history despite losing 4-2 against Lekhwiya on Wednesday night at the Al Sadd stadium in the second leg of the round of 16. El Jaish benefited from their victory in the first leg in which they scored four goals without reply.
Congolese attacker Djoko Kaluyituka gave a perfect start to Lekhwiya, scoring the first goal of the game in the eighth minute. Despite a resilient first half performance by the Lekhwiya players, they could not prevent the Soldiers from equalizing. Uzbek forward Sardor Rashidov scoring in the thirty seventh minute to end the first half with both sides level pegging.
The excitement continued in the second half as Lekhwiya aimed to close the deficit. The Red Knights scored three consecutive goals, thanks to a brace by Ismail Mohammed who scored in the forty ninth and fifty second minute. Nam Tae-Hee also got his name on the score sheet as he converted a penalty in the sixty sixth minute. Lekhwiya even went down to ten men as Chico Flores was sent off in the fifty ninth minute.
Romarinho scored the all important second goal for El Jaish in the seventy first minute which confirmed his team’s spot in the quarters.
The game was the sixth confrontation between the two teams this season as the two legged affair ended with a 6-4 aggregate victory for El jaish. Lekhwiya failed to qualify to the last eight for the third time while El Jaish will make their first ever appearance in the AFC Champions league quarter finals.
