Undefeated start for Umm Salal
The Orange Fortress has thus far enjoyed an undefeated start to the 2016/2017 season and will be looking to build on this after the international break. Head coach Bulent Uygen is fast cementing his reputation as one of the most tactically savvy coaches in the QSL, and this has been highlighted in the opening games of the campaign.
Umm Salal grabbed an opening day victory with a 2-1 over Al Khor, with attackers Yannick Sagbo and Ismael Mohammed supplying the goals. Whilst the second game of the season saw Umm Salal shut out the reigning QSL champions Al Rayyan in a gritty 0-0 draw.The positive start certainly builds on the good work of last season, when Umm Salal finished just outside the top four places.
In terms of professional players, Umm Salal has seemed to pick up a real bargain in young Brazilian midfielder Alef. The youngster joined the club on a season long loan deal from Portuguese side Braga, and showed real promise in his sides draw with Al Rayyan. Tough in the tackle along with a good range of passing, he is set for a big year in the heart of the Umm Salal midfielder.
Likewise youngster Helal Mohammed picked up from Al Khor over the summer has the potential to stand out in this attacking side. The pacy winger was influential in his sides 2-1 victory, providing a perfect cross for Mohammed Ismael to slot in the winner. If the 23-year-old enjoys a further upturn in form he could force his way into the national team picture.
Yannick Sagbo is now enjoying his second season in the QSL, and the Orange Fortress will be relying on the big Ivorian’s goals to push them into the top 4 reckoning. Not only is this, but his holding up of the ball vital to the way his side will play over the course of the season. Sagbo admitted in a preseason interview that he intends to beat last season’s tally of thirteen goals.
