Al Kharaitiyat bounced back brilliantly from two goals down to beat Al Markhiya 3-2 to earn three valuable points in Week 16 of the QNB Stars League at the Al Khor Stadium on Saturday.

Sanjar Tursunov (43rd minute), Josue Mohy (86th) and Anwar Diba (90+3) scored for Al Kharaitiyat. Rebin Solaka and Mohammed Saleh netted in the 21st and 22nd for Al Markhiya.

Al Kharaitiyat, who were without ace Moroccan striker Rachid Tiberkanine, now have 13 points. Al Markhiya stayed rooted to the bottom with eight.

Al Markhiya fought initially as if they were waging a do-or-die battle. They dominated the proceedings in the opening session and created chances one after the other.

The Oryxes were rewarded for their hard work in subsequent minutes around midway through the first half through Solace and then through Mohammed Salah.

Solaka opened the scoring off a free-kick, while Salah found the net slotting home a rebound when rival goalkeeper Ahmed Sofiyan fumbled with a shot from Eric de Oliveira.

Tursunov’s goal came off a corner kick taken by Diba when the Al Markhiya defence least expected it.

Al Kharaitiyat were in the game a bit more after the break and they missed out on a golden chance to equalise when Diba’s penalty was saved by goalkeeper Al Bakri. The penalty was awarded when Al Markhiya defender Mohammed Shaban handled Tursunov’s shot.

But The Thunders were not to be denied as their persistent efforts paid off in the form of a header by an unmarked Mohy as Al Markhiya paid the price for failing to close the game.

Then came the climax as Diba’s long-ranger went in after kissing the underneath of the horizontal.
