Riyad Mahrez delivered a moment of magic as defending champions Al Ahli Saudi FC edged past Al Duhail 1-0 in the AFC Champions League Elite last-16 tie at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah on Monday.
The Algerian winger curled a stunning free-kick from 25 yards with three minutes left in the second period of extra time, securing his side’s place in the quarterfinals.
The breakthrough came after Ivan Toney’s penalty was saved by Al Duhail goalkeeper Salah Zakaria, who had earlier denied several Al Ahli threats.
Mahrez’s winner sets up a quarterfinal clash against Malaysia’s Johor Darul Ta’zim.
Al Ahli dominated much of the contest, but Al Duhail created dangerous moments, hitting the post twice through Benjamin Bourigeaud and Adil Boulbina. Edouard Mendy made several key saves to keep the visitors at bay.
The match was decided in a dramatic extra-time period that showcased both teams’ resilience before Mahrez’s clinical strike sealed the victory.
