Kicking off the 2017 Workers Cup, there was a lot of build-up and expectation from both teams takeing part in their 2nd Workers Cup. But in the end, it was a one-all draw, with both goals coming late in the last 10 minutes of the first half. To say that the game was defensive would be an understatement as the attacking line lead by Mamuda of Shappoorji and Amani of Galfar kept the spectators on their toes for the remainder of the game.
Overall, both teams showed excellent sportsmanship with the occasional reckless tackles by Kaggawa of Galfar repeatedly testing the referee’s patience earning him a yellow card in the 38th minute, exposing their defensive problems after they were laid bare during an eight-minute spell in which their defense was compromised.
Match 2: Delta Doha Corporation 0 vs ALYSJ 4
It took less than 5 minutes for debutants ALYSJ to overpower the experienced Delta team. Two first half goals from midfielder Eric Boetang gave ALYSJ a 2-0 half time lead.
Shiva and Paul added to Delta’s woes with each of them scoring in the 36th and 43rd minutes of the game. The rather stunned Delta team had to withstand wave after wave of attacks to give their manager some anxious moments. Feeling overwhelmed, Delta made three changes to the side, once enforced with injury. Featuring three at the back, wing backs and a diamond in midfield, Delta looked more in control by now with a sequence of set-pieces which really tested what had been a weakness for the team throughout the game.
Match 3: Taleb Group 5 vs TRAGS 0
Defending champions Taleb Group opened their 2017 campaign in style with a convincing 5-0 trouncing of TRAGS - a disappointing performance for a team appearing for a record 5th time in as many years. TRAGS would need to rethink their game plan for any chances of progression, looking vulnerable every time their opponents attacked.
Other than lone early effort blocked by the Taleb goalkeeper after a good strong run from Benup gurung down the right, the game was a one-sided affair dominated by the strong and disciplined offence of Ghanian trio, Sadat, Jerry and Franklin scoring 4 goals in a span of 25 minutes.
Not to be left behind, Mubarak saw a looping header well gathered by Ibrahim at the other end who sent a powerful drive over the top on from 35-yards out and put it past the TRAGS goalie.
Game 4: Mowasalat 12 vs Al Balagh 0
Mowasalat, in their typical hard hitting attacking style routed Al Balagh on their debut. A comprehensive 12-0 win featuring 6 goals from striker Abdulgani.
It was an unfortunate first game for Al Balagh team manager, having to face one of the strongest teams in the hopes of recording their first win. Dreadful defending gifted Abdulgani the opener just 2 minutes in the game with Al Balagh showing no fightback and resilience to stop Mark Adjei scoring the next 2 goals within 10 minutes.
Had it not been for a number of decent saves from the Al Balagh goalkeeper, the score line could have been even more damning.
Match 5: L&T 2 vs Doha Pest Company 1
A spectacular game of skill and nerves, L&T fought off a determined Doha Pest comeback to win 2-1, as they kicked off their campaign in style. The game showcased the huge difference in the playing style of the two sides.
L&T manager experimented with his side during the game, switching to a 3-5-2 from the starting 4-3-3 formation that served them well. L&T looked the brighter side and capitalised on their dominance in the 21 minute, when #7 Abdul Azeez headed in.
Good work down the right from Dennis who swung in a delicious corner that was met by Mubarak to give Doha Pest the equalizer in the 35th minute. Two minutes before time, Ibrahim pulled one back for L&T midway with an outrageous free kick from 25-yards-out. The stunning shot evaded everyone, sailing past the Doha Pest goal.
Match 6: Medgulf Construction 7 vs Dico-Tech Qatar 0
Out of luck Dico-Tech started their campaign in disappointing fashion as they were seen off with almost the same Medgulf team that beat them 15-0 last year. With better defending, Dico-Tech were able to hold off the star striker Peter of Medgulf scoring only 2 goals with a final score of 7-0.
An early goal from Peter Azure in the 6th minute and the heroic efforts of Philip with 4 goals and Abdul Jalil with 1 goal left the entire Dico-Tech team scratching their heads.
Game 7: Dulsco Qatar 4 vs NAAAS Group 0
Playing under perfect weather, NAAAS group just couldn’t get their act together with their midfield often caught napping by the experienced Dulsco side, who put four past their opponents.
Isaac curled a free kick in the tenth minute to the edge of the six-yard box and Lawrence rose highest to power a downwards header into the net.
The in-experienced NAAAS responded well and struck the post twice in the space of a couple of minutes.
Saoud’s in-swinging free kick was just a little shy of the top post. Almost straight away an Abdullahi cross from the left was just too unlucky and hit the side post.
Two minutes from the first half, Bhulinder’s men shot themselves in the foot again as they lost possession in the left back position with Lawrence netting his 2nd goal of the day. NAAAS players were frustrated a few minutes later as Lawrence let rip with a 30-yard drive that went straight into the net. Then, with virtually their last attack in the 49th minute, Charles sealed their fate with a memorable 4-0 win.
Match 8: Gulf Contracting company 6 vs AGME 0
A Benson Gyamera hat-trick saw GCC coast to a comfortable victory against newcomers AGME. Benson’s treble, supplemented by poor defence, manufactured an easy 6-0 win for GCC. Benson fired in a low cross five minutes into the game that was dead on target and a second goal was only around the corner. Benson was on fire, he scored with a brilliant header in the 8th minute with a 3rd following in the 18th minute.
Kelvin added the 4th with a delightful volley in the last minute of the first half. GCC pushed on hard in the 2nd half to add 2 more goals before the whistle. But for AGME, the game was already out of reach by half-time.
Match 9: AKTOR S.A. 1 vs G5 Security 2
The two new teams showed great footballing skill with a well-fought 2-1 victory for G5 Security. The match saw
two G5 goals in the second half. Feeling the pressure, AKTOR got 4 yellow cards and 2 were given to G5. Both teams were lucky not to have conceded a red card.
AKTOR were not overwhelmed by the occasion and charged ahead with a goal from Aziz Kitaka giving his team some hope but fell short to tie the match thanks to a well-oiled G5 defence.
Match 10: Boom Construction 0 vs Arab Coast Projects 6
Yet another one-sided game. The all Ghanaian team of Arab Coast were simply too strong for Boom Construction. Goals flowed at regular intervals with Roland Nase scoring twice in the first half after Michael opened the tab in the 7th minute and struck the Boom wall with a free-kick as Arab coast maintained a lively tempo.
Set-pieces are almost always a likely route to goal and a series of early corners had Boom sweating. The corner delivery from both sides, stretched Boom players to the limit conceding 3 more goals in the first half. A little more composure and Arab Coast might have been ahead by 2 more goals just after half time. It was 6-0 at full time.
Match 11: Cofely Besix Mannai (QAS) 0 vs Al Asmakh Facilities 8
Al Asmakh overpowered the undisciplined Cofely Besix Mannai side with sheer dominance throughout the game. The Mannai side seemed ill-prepared to face one of the strongest teams of the tournament. Abu Baker & Samuel wreaked havoc on the Mannai defense sharing 7 goals between them.
Shehu Mohammed netted the 8th in the 47th minute and it was 8-0 to end the game. Mannai will need to improve quickly or they will endure a torrid drubbing from other teams in the tournament. Back to the drawing board for Mannai.
Match 12: Tanzifco 1 vs QDVC 6
A Shocking loss for 2014 champions Tanzifco, who succumbed to a 6-1 defeat at the hands of QDVC. Opening their 2017 campaign in style, QDVC striker Siraj ul Islam scored after just 70 seconds before adding a further two later in the game.
Moath’s men sometimes resorted to heavy-handed tactics in a bid to limit QDVC's dominance, but it had little impact.
QDVC’s deft finish extended the hosts' advantage on the stroke of the interval, with Talla securing the third goal.
The night got worse for Tanzifco when Siraj scored again to take his goal tally to three, while Talla and Amit
Rana followed their team-mate adding two more goals soon after to compound their opponents’ woes at 6-0 in the 40th minute.
Tanzifco’s consolation goal completed the scoring late on and QDVC will now turn their attention to next week’s fixture against the talented Doha Pest team. The last goal came in two minutes from time as Aziz volleyed home from inside the box after QDVC goalkeeper flapped at a corner.
Match 13: Al Balagh L&T JV 0 vs Desert Line Projects 1
Arguable one of the best games of the day, Al Balagh L&T JV showed an impressive yet aggressive form on the field with consistent and accurate long passes combined with some deliberate attacking game. Desert Line Projects were no less pumped up to face the onslaught and unnerved the L&T JV defense with their quick passing game.
The L&T JV were caught dilly-dallying in possession on too many occasions, leaving Desert Line powerful midfield to steal the ball with ease and ruthlessly surge forward to get the better of a ragged L&T V defense. The story could have been different had Desert Line goalie not dived low to save Ali Yahya’s stabbed effort from close range in the opening minutes. But the striker failed to make any further inroads through ball and Desert line counter-attacked through Joseph Muthini who cut in to three defenders and score with his left foot in the 46th minute.
Match 14: Outlook Trading 2 vs AALCO 0
AALCO knew it was not going to be a walk in the park against 2-time runner-up’s Outlook Trading who are riding high on confidence after a well-deserved 2-0 win over AALCO.
Amir Shrestha and Arjun Subba struck either side of half-time with their typical tiki-taka game to secure three points for Outlook as they move ahead to face a tougher Dulsco team next week.
“We have trained hard for the tournament this year. But Outook simply outpaced us today. We had a positive reaction at the start of the second half, but after that we made too many big mistakes for us to catch up.” said Abid Shakoor, AALCO team coach.
Match 15: Carillion 1 vs G4S 2
Appearing in their 3rd Workers Cup, Carillion look like a more cohesive unit. But it was G4S who prevailed 2-1 in an exciting and balanced match that saw regular shots at both goals.
Carilllion were leading 1-0 thanks to a brilliant long range shot from Subash in the 19th minute. It wasn’t until the final ten minutes of the game when Raju Chilwal headed a superb goal to tie the game at 1-1. The game appeared to be heading to a draw until G4S landed the knockout blow over a corner and Raju stooped to deliver a hammer blow with another header past the Carillion goalkeeper in stoppage time.
Match 16: BOTC 0 vs Nakheel Landscapes 8
Nakheel meant business when it took to the field at Qatar Sports Club in front of 6,000 spectators with a sizeable number of its own team supporters. The opening goal came off a penalty in the 4th minute of the game, making a fantastic start to their 2017 Workers Cup qualification campaign as Mahamat Abdelkarim scored five goals, while Mousa Hamid scored twice and Mahamat Akbache scored the last goal in a 8-0 hammering of BOTC.
BOTC failed to cope with Nakheel's attacking threat throughout the game after consistent defensive lapses. Two goals in just over a minute from striker Abdelkarim and goals at regular intervals rounded off the rout, which should give Nakheel plenty of reason for confidence ahead of next week's group game with Galfar Al Misnad.
