Late penalty rescues point for Sailiya against Al Ahli (2-2)
In a topsy-turvy affair, Al Sailiya managed to salvage a point in the 93rd minute with a Fawzi Aaish penalty to deny Al Ahli the victory. The match was played at Al Ahli’s home ground - the Hamad bin Khalifa Stadium and ended 2-2. At the close of play, Sailiya were the happier of the two sides as Trabelsi’ s men could ill afford another loss in Round 8 of the Qatar Stars League.

Ahli came into this match on the back of two successive wins while Sailiya had the burden of two consecutive defeats. Both teams exchanged possession at the start before Ahli started to gain the upper hand by putting pressure on the Sailiya defence.

However against the run of play, it was Sailiya who took the surprise lead in the 34th minute. Omar Ibrahim delivered a curling, looping cross into the box where an unmarked Sayyaf al Karby was able to head it off the post and into the goal for the Peregrines first of the evening.

Just two minutes later, Faouzi Aaish had a chance to double their lead but his shot was saved by Ahli keeper Amer Dosari. The first half ended with Al Ahli dominating possession but producing little in the way of chances.

In the second half, Sailiya didn’t sit back and were looking to create chances rather than just protecting a slender lead. Aaish had two more chances but Ahli keeper Dosari was quick to the danger and mopped up the shots.

Just when it looked like Sailiya were in the driving seat, Al Ahli finally woke up. Ahli striker Ndombe Mubele scored two goals in a span of two minutes (78’&79) to completely turn the match around.

The first one came when Pedro sent a searching ball down the middle, Mubele toe-poked the ball past the defender and the on-rushing keeper.  His relief to finally get his second goal of the season was clear for all to see as he blasted the ball into an open net from close range.

Mubele’s second goal was similar to his first as again he utilised his pace to latch on to a through ball before bearing down on goal and smashing the ball through the keeper’s legs.

Sailiya who were on top till then suddenly found themselves chasing the game but there would prove to be a late twist in the tale. Ahli conceded a penalty right at the death. Fawzi Aaish stepped up and converted it to snatch a point for Sailiya in dramatic fashion.

Both teams will feel equally aggrieved at having to share points. Sailiya, despite Ahli’s formidable attacking prowess had more shots on goal and were leading. Al Ahli meanwhile should have wrapped up the win after the brace from Mubele.

El Jaish outclass Mesaimeer in 5-2 rout
El Jaish took all three points on offer in Round 8 of the Qatar Stars League with an emphatic 5-2 win packed full of action and stunning goals at the Hamad bin Khalifa Stadium. In a first half demolition of Mesaimeer, El Jaish scored four goals to all but end the game before the second half could even begin.

A brace for both Romarinho and Rashidov undid a promising start by the Torches who for the first ten minutes were going toe to toe with the home side.

In the 11th minute though,  El Jaish broke the deadlock when a cross from the left was cleverly chested down by Wagner to fellow Brazilian Romarinho who from close range was never going to miss.

Four minutes later Sardor Rashidov opened his account with a spectacular strike down the left.

Mesaimeer finally went down the other end and won a corner, from the resulting delivery Abdelrahman Samir was the only player who judged the flight of the ball correctly and he nodded in the Torches’ firs of the night (36').

However just a minute later the Uzbek Rashidov again unleashed his powerful left boot to get his second and Jaish’s third of the night. It was a well worked goal as the ball was perfectly laid off to him and he struck it first time to catch the keeper unawares.

Mesaimeer were on the ropes and were just hoping that they could make it to half time two goals down, but Jaish were not finished as this time a superb solo effort from Romarinho found the net. The Brazilian was given too much time on the edge of the box, he worked his way to find the right moment before letting rip with a thunderous effort which smashed off the bar and into the goal (44’).

After an initial period of possession for Mesaimeer in the second half, it was business as usual for Jaish as they slowly found their rhythm and began to push further in their opponents half.

Another spectacular goal came but this time it was courtesy of Mesaimeer's Erivelto in the 84th minute, the Brazilian pulled away from his marker in the box and when the cross arrived he connected sweetly with his right foot to make it 4-2.

The final goal of the game came in the 88th minute from a Rashidov cross, the winger could have had a go himself but instead elected to pass to teammate Magid who scored with a header from close range.

Mesaimeer were simply outclassed and although they only conceded once in the second half, it was the first half were the match was lost.

Jaish continue to show fine form and perhaps this could be their year to finally win the Qatar Stars League.
