Qatar Sports Club, coached by veteran Brazilian Sebastiao Lazaroni are currently locked in a relegation dog fight to avoid dropping down to the Qatar Gas League. QSL online decided to review the form of the
Kings ahead of the final games of the season.
In the last three QSL clashes, Qatar SC fought hard to share points with title holders Al Rayyan, Al Sailiya and El Jaish but surrendered advantage they had so carefully managed after the gloomy first 10 weeks of the 2015-16 season.
With Lazaroni brought in October last year, Qatar SC managed to jump start their sluggish campaign after former coach Radhi Shenaishil suffered five losses with just one draw in the first six games of the new campaign. When Shenaishil was shown the door, Lazaroni made immediate impact at his 'home' club, in what has been his third stint with The Kings.
Lazaroni grabbed his first win with his side with a 2-0 win over Mesaimeer at the end of October year to try and cover lost ground. The second win of the season was shock 1-0 over highflying in December.
Two months later, Qatar edged past Doha giants Al Sadd 1-0 in what many considered an 'upset' win.
Buoyed by their 'surprise' win over Al Sadd, Qatar SC stitched two more victories in February - beating Al Ahli 3-2 followed by a convincing 3-0 win over relegation rivals Mesaimeer.
But just five wins from 24 QSL matches reflects the kind of indifferent form Qatar SC fans seemed to have endured this season. Add eight draws and 11 losses to those figures and Qatar SC fans should be feeling worried going into the final games of the season.
In December last year, Qatar SC shared points in a goalless draw against Al Gharafa and a 2-2 stalemate against Al Wakrah added to Lazaroni's season woes. Add the the draws the last three weeks and you begin to understand the worried look on Lazaroni's face going into the last two rounds.
Placed 13th, Qatar SC is now firmly locked in a relegation battle with Al Kharaitiyat who are in 12th spot with a tally of 24 points. Come the 15th of April, Lazaroni and his squad will know his team's fate this season – first up for Qatar SC they will take on former champions Al Gharafa at Al Ahli Stadium.Whilst Qatar SC’s will battle hosts Al Wakrah Stadium on the last day of the 2015-16 season.
Lazaroni's boys must attempt to pick up maximum number of 6 points from the last two games and hope Al Kharaityat drop points in their final two games of the season.
Lazaroni will be relying on the midfield pairing of Emiliano Vecchio and Han Kook-Young to push his side on in these final must win games. Winter signing Vecchio has been one of the King’s stand out players in recent weeks. His deadly accuracy from set-pieces has provided plenty of assists for his side. Whilst South Korean international Han Kook-Young has been a mainstay in the season, Qatar SC will need the former Kashiwa Reysol man to be on top form if they are to beat the drop.
For a side that has lifted eight QSL titles and the Heir Apparent Cup three occasions, Qatar SC must grind out two big wins for the fans in the next couple of rounds. Otherwise it could be a long, hard 2016/2017 for the Kings in the Qatar Gas League.
