Round six saw plenty of key results which had ramifications at both ends of the table. In our weekly feature, QSL online picks over the talking points that matter.
Goals, Goals, Goals.
Wednesday’s installment of QSL action saw an incredible 21 goals scored from just four matches. Whilst a couple of sides can be guilty of some questionable defending, you cannot deny the attacking flair exhibited from the sides looking to lift the QSL falcon shield come the end of the season.
El Jaish lead the way with six of the best against Al Sailiya, although the fact the soldiers conceded four would be a source of concern for French coach Sabri Lamouchi. Likewise Al Sadd brushed aside high-flying Al Shahania 4-0. Algerian striker Bagdad Bounjah scored a brace, and maintained the Wolves unbeaten streak in the season.
Clubs looking for a change of leadership
Last week saw two clubs relieve their head coaches of their duties. Al Arabi dismissed their Uruguayan head coach Gerardo Pelusso, after their round four loss to Lekhwiya 4-2. Arabi have had a slow start to the league and that put pay to Pelusso’s stint with the dream team. The club is now on the hunt for a new manager, who will be charged with drastically improving the fortunes of the side.
Likewise Al Kharaitiyat dismissed Bosnian coach Amar Osim, following a toothless 2-0 defeat to Umm Salal. The Thunders are currently in twelfth place in the QSL standings, and are without a win in four QSL games. Al Kharaitiyat will now be turning their attentions to finding a new head coach over the international break who will be able to push the side away from the relegation zone.
With four sides set to drop down to the Qatar Gas League this season, clubs are not wasting any time in getting rid of under preforming head coaches. The situation is certainly going to make the relegation dog fight an interesting one this year.
Could Muaither beat the drop?
Performance of the weekend has to go to Muaither who left it late to stun Al Arabi 2-1 on Thursday evening. A last-gasp deflected strike from Hamad Mansour gave the Stallions all three points, and their second consecutive win of the season. The early form of fellow promoted Al Shahania would have served as inspiration for Muaither, who are currently in eleventh place in the QSL standings.
Phillipe Birrol’s side goes again after the international break with a tie against Al Khor. If the Stallions are to continue their upturn in form they could indeed join Al Shahania in beating the drop.
