With the international break starting, and the QSL taking a break in action QSL online has decided to have a look at some of the goalkeepers who have made a real impact for their sides at the start of the 2016/2017 QSL season. All of the statistics used in the story have been supplied by the Stats Company, the QSL’s official statistical partner.
One keeper who has excelled this season has been Umm Salal stopper Baba Malick. The former Lekhwiya keeper has made an impressive start to the season, and has only conceded three goals during his five games guarding the Orange Fortress this term. Malick has saved 88.7% of shots that he has faced, the highest figure in the league. It’s important also to note that in the tie when Malick was absent from the side, Umm Salal conceded four against El Jaish.
Understandably keepers towards the bottom of the QSL standings, tend to be a little busier in matches and that is why two newly promoted stoppers make up our five must watch list. First up is veteran keeper Basil Zedan of Muaither.
The experienced campaigner has been a cool head at the back for The Stallions in recent weeks, who have registered six points from their last two QSL games. The fact that Zedan has saved 72% of the shots he has faced underlines his importance if Phillipe Birol’s side are to beat the drop.
Al Ahli have enjoyed a solid start to the QSL season this term, central to the Brigadeers success has been keeper Amer Al Dossari. The 39-year old keeper has played for a host of QSL sides during his seventeen career in Qatar, but this season Al Dossari has improved his distribution, finding the right man 80% of the time, helping his side to break into attack quickly. More impressive is that the veteran has saved 70.8% of shots that he has faced this term.
The second newly promoted keeper on the must watch list the Al Shahania keeper Khalifa Al Dossari. Al Shahania have enjoyed a fantastic start to the season, and are currently in eighth position in the QSL standings. Central to their success has been young stopper Al Dossari, who has put in a number of crucial performances particularly against Muaither back in round two. The youngster has saved 65.6% of the shots he has faced so far this season.
Finally Ahmed Soufiane of Al Kharaitiyat completes our list. Despite the Thunders languishing in the relegation places club captain Soufiane has lead by example. He has saved 65.3% of the shots he has faced this term, if he had saved less Al Kharaitiyat could have been in an even more precarious position.
