Lekhwiya head coach Djamel Belmadi has been awarded the QSL coach of the month award for January. The Algerian tactician picked up the award on Monday evening at Lekhwiya’s training ground.

The four time QSL champions enjoyed a undefeated January winning four of their five games in the month, giving themselves a three point cushion at the top of the QSL standings. Defensively the Red Knights conceded five goals from five January games. 

January started with a comprehensive 3-1 win over Muaither. Whilst two important victories over title rivals Al Gharafa (3-0) & Al Sadd (2-1) set the tone for Belmadi’s boys. Lekhwiya then showed plenty of character to share the points with relegation threatened Wakrah coming behind from three goals down to draw 3-3. Lekhwiya rounded off the month with a narrow 1-0 victory against Al Arabi.

The coach of the month award is even more impressive considering that Lekhwiya missed a number of key players through  international competitions, injury and suspension. January certainly proved to be a key month of the Red Knights as they charged to the top of the QSL standings. 

Djamel Belmadi will now be targeting further victories during a busy Febuary schedule. The Algerian coach will be hoping his side can further pull away at the top of the QSL standings when Lekhwiya take on the current QSL champions Al Rayyan in the QSL match of the week for round 20.
