The 2019-20 QNB Stars League Week 10 games, played on 7th, 8th and 9th November, witnessed keen contests exciting action, upset results and as many as 20 goals.
Two players – Mohammed Muntari of Al Duhail and Sardor Rashidov of Qatar SC excelled with two-goal performances.
Al Duhail widened their gap with second-placed Al Rayyan from two points to four after the latter dropped points following their draw with Al Shahania.
Similarly, the gap between Al Rayyan and Al Gharafa was bridged from four to two points after The Cheetahs beat Umm Salal.
The tournament will now take a long break during which the 2022 FIFA World Cup and 2023 Asian Cup joint qualifiers, 24th Arabian Gulf Cup and 2019 FIFA Club World Cup will be held.
On the domestic front, the remaining group-stage (Round 2, 3, 4 and 5) matches of the Ooredoo Cup will be played from this weekend.
Qatar SC’s 3-0 victory over defending champions Al Sadd was the biggest upset of the week. Sardor Rashidov (double) and Kayke Rodriguez were the scorers as The Kings notched up their third consecutive victory, and fourth overall.
Interestingly, Qatar SC achieved all four victories after ex-Qatar international midfielder Wesam Rizik took charge of The Kings, replacing Spanish coach Carlos Alos Ferrer. They moved on to 12 points, but stayed in the ninth position.
Al Sadd stood fourth with 15 points with two deferred games in hand (against Al Arabi and Al Khor) as The Wolves were busy with their AFC Champions League engagements.
Al Duhail kept the top spot with 26 points following their dramatic 3-2 victory over Al Khor. It was a fine comeback by The Red Knights after being down by two goals by half-an-hour into the game.
Abdulla Moraisi and Ahmed Hammoudan put Al Khor 2-0 up, only to see Al Duhail reply through Mohammed Muntari’s brace and Yousef Msakni.
Al Khor remained in 10th position with five points.
Al Rayyan kept the second position in the table with 22 points despite being held 2-2 by Al Shahania, who punched above their weight.
Abdulaziz Hatem and Sebastian Soria were Al Rayyan’s scorers, while Saoud Farhan and Ramin Rezaein found the target for Al Shahania, who remained at the bottom with four points.
Al Gharafa continued their winning ways and stayed third with 20 points after they beat Umm Salal 2-0. Hector Moreno and Sofiane Hanni were the scorers.
Umm Salal’s woes compounded following their seventh defeat in this season’s QNB Stars League. They stayed 11th with five points and face an uphill task to move away from the danger zone when the tournament resumes.
Al Sailiya climbed from seventh to sixth spot with 14 points as they beat Al Arabi 2-1. Meshaal Al Shammari and Mubarak Boussoufa scored for Al Sailiya and Pierre-Michel Lassoga for Al Arabi.
Al Arabi, nevertheless, stood fifth with 14 points.
Al Wakrah scored a crucial 2-1 win over Al Ahli to be on 12 points. Ali Karami and Mohamed Benyettou were on target for Al Wakrah, who stayed eighth. Nabil El Zahr found the only goal of Al Ahli, who slipped from sixth to seventh position with 13 points.
