Al Shamal defeated Al Shahania 3-0 at the Al Bayt Stadium in Week 19 of the 2024-2025 season Ooredoo Stars League on Friday.

Younes El Hannach (15th minute), Mowafak Awad (61st minute) and Mohammed Omar (75th minute) scored the goals for Al Shamal, who moved to 26 points in the standings, while Al Shahania, who entered the match tied on points with their opponents, remained on 23 points.

Coming from a two-week hiatus occasioned by the international break, both sides looked rejuvenated and appeared to be at their best with their impressive display throughout the entertaining encounter.

Al Shamal got the opening goal within a quarter of an hour through El Hannach, who found himself in an unmarked position after receiving a diagonal cross from Mohammed Omar following a fast break. The resultant right-footed shot went embarrassingly between the legs of goalkeeper Shehab Ellethy to the delight of the home fans.

Al Shammal almost doubled the lead eight minutes later, but a left-footed shot from the right side of the box by Naïm Sliti went just inches wide of the target.

Al Shahania came back for the second half as a more determined team, with coach Jose Murcia making two important changes at halftime, replacing Lotfi Madjer with Jaime Rubio and Yousef Hani Ballan with Hossam Kamal.

The substitutions, however, seemed not to have had the desired effect, as it was Al Shamal who instead doubled their lead a minute off the hour mark through Awad, who rifled home a left-footed shot from a very tight angle.

Al Shahania had a chance at redemption in the 65th minute when Al Shamal’s Mohammed Al Mannai conceded a penalty for a foul on Mohammed Ibrahim. The subsequent spot kick taken by Pelle van Amersfoort, however, was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Babacar Seck.

Al Shamal got their third goal in the 75th minute, with Mohammed Omar finding the back of the net to ensure his team closed the match with three unreplied goals.
