A stoppage-time penalty ensured a much-needed 2-1 win for Qatar SC over Al Shamal in Week 14 of the 2024-2025 season Ooredoo Stars League at the Suhaim Bin Hamad Stadium of Qatar SC on Thursday.
Al Shamal were reduced to 10 men in the 38th minute after goalkeeper Babacar Seck was given the marching orders for landing his head on Qatar SC’s Ahmed Abdel Kader’s neck while going for a high ball, having advanced to the top of the box.
While Ataa Jaber (45+3 minute) and Abdel Kader (90+10 minute-penalty) scored the goals for Qatar SC, Baghdad Boundedjah scored from the penalty spot for Al Shamal in the 82nd minute.
Al Shamal also conceded a penalty after Abdelkader was brought down from behind by substitute Omar Ali while the former was charging from left inside the danger area.
The result saw Qatar SC leapfrog to 16 points, while Al Shamal remained on 19 points.
Both teams played attacking football and had several attempts at the rival dens, but could not find the target early enough.
Bounedjah led the attack for Al Shamal most of the times and in the 32nd minute one of his headers missed the right post by inches.
A minute later, Qatar SC’s Percy Muzi Tau’s kick went just over the Al Shamal goal post.
In the 35th minute, Bounedjah made another header, this time off a cross from Mowafak Awad, but the ball sailed over the crossbar on the left.
In the added time of opening half, Jaber produced a spectacular goal to put his team ahead. He first took an Abdelkader lob on to his chest and then volleyed a kick to turn around and fire into the right corner.
The second session saw Al Shamal trying hard, but rued misses. In the 72nd minute, Bounedjah produced another header (off a corner kick) and this time it hit the left post.
Al Shamal’s chance to equalize eventually came when Bounedjah was brought down by Qatar SC defenders inside the box. The referee called for a penalty and Bounedjah made no mistake (1-1).
Al Shamal, however, soon paid for their own mistake as Abdel Kader was tackled from behind and he stepped up to beat the rival goalkeeper with ease and rush into celebrations.
