Al Khor scored their first win of the 2024-2025 season Ooredoo Stars League on Saturday and in emphatic style as they shocked leaders Al Duhail 2-1 in Week 11 at the Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium of Al Duhail club.
Ahmad Hassan Al Mohannadi (41st minute) and Ruben Semedo (47th minute) scored for Al Khor, while Edmilson Junior (72nd minute) pulled one back for Al Duhail.
Al Duhail also missed a penalty in the 84th minute when Luis Alberto shot over much from the spot.
The Red Knights, however, remained on top of the standings with 25 points (eight wins, one draw and two losses), while Al Khor after their first win saw their tally move to seven points (one win, four draws and six losses) while still being in 12th position.
It was a determined display from Al Khor and they showed that they have the mettle to challenge the very best.
After fending off several attacks for most part of the opening half, Al Khor moved into the lead minutes before the half-time break as captain Al Mohannadi made the most after Yohan Boli won a fine ball and passed on to him.
Al Mohannadi ran past two defenders from the left and kicked the ball through the legs of a third which after hitting the goalkeeper also hit the left post before just about going in as Al Mohannadi kept following it.
The ‘freak’ goal put Al Khor in the lead which they doubled soon at the start of second half as Semedo struck a beautiful header to a fine free-kick (from about 30 yards away left from the box) taken by Sofiane Hanni.
Al Duhail tried to make a comeback, but were held back for a long time by Al Khor defence. They, however, made good of a through ball from substitute Ismail Mohammed which travelled across from right to the left for a charging-in Edmilson Junior to score (1-2).
The Red Knights were frantic to get the equalizer and kept attacking and as a result succeeded in winning a penalty when an Olunga kick hit the hand of Al Khor’s Adil Rhaili inside the danger area. But Alberto, who took the spot kick, shot over much to the delight of the opposition and their Tunisian coach Mehdi Nafti.
The battle between the two sides intensified towards the end as 14 minutes of stoppage time was added, but Al Khor held on bravely for their first and famous win of the season.
