Al Wakrah lost 0-2 at home against Tajik champions FC Ravshan in the sixth and final round (Group A) of the 2024-2025 season AFC Champions League Two at the Al Janoub Stadium on Wednesday.
The loss is, however, inconsequential as The Blue Wave, who defeated FC Ravshan 1-0 in the reversed fixture, had already qualified to the Round of 16 following a 3-3 draw against Iran’s Tractor FC in the fifth round.
Both of the Tajikistan team’s goals came in the second half, with Aziz Khaitov finding the back of the net in the 55th minute and Amirdzhon Safarov consolidating the lead in the 81st minute. However, the visitors were eliminated from the tournament after finishing third with three points.
The game started on a strong note for Al Wakrah with Moayed Hassan’s long-range effort requiring a save from Ravshan goalkeeper Yevhen Hrytsenko.
Al Wakrah challenged Ravshan again in the 15th minute when Alexander Scholz delivered a deep lob to Moayed Hassan, whose volley from within the area was thwarted by Hrytsenko.
Ravshan struggled to pose a threat to the home side as Sorbon Ghiyosov, Muhammadjon Rahimov and Masrur Kiyomidinov all missed the target with their long-range attempts.
In the 36th minute, David Mawutor had an opportunity for Ravshan, but the Ghanaian midfielder sent his free-kick over the bar, and shortly after, Masrur Kiyomidinov’s shot also went high following a quick cutback from Kojo Matic.
Both teams faced difficulties in converting chances, with Al Wakrah’s Omar Al Osad having his shot from outside the box blocked, while Mawutor failed to challenge the Qatari side defence during a counter-attack, resulting in Ravshan not registering a single shot on target in the first half.
Al Wakrah nearly took the lead in the 50th minute when Farid Boulaya delivered a cross into the box for Nasser Al Yazidi, whose close-range header was saved by Hrytsenko.
In a surprising turn, the Tajikistan side took the lead five minutes later when Sorbon Ghiyosov made a powerful run down the right flank and assisted Azizbek Khaitov, who scored past goalkeeper Omair Al Sayed.
The visitors came close to extending their lead in the 61st minute when Masrur Kiyomidinov found an unmarked Mawutor, but the midfielder's shot hit the crossbar.
Ravshan capitalized on Al Wakrah’s vulnerable right side, with Matic dispossessing Boulaya and then assisting Amirdzhon Safarov, who scored their second goal in the 81st minute.
