Al Wakrah scored a comfortable 3-1 victory over Al Khor in Week 6 of the 2024-2025 season Ooredoo Stars League at the Al Janoub Stadium on Thursday.

Ricardo Gomes scored a brace for the winners, striking in 21st & 62nd minutes while Ayoub Assal found the net in 45+2 minute. For Al Khor, their only goal came from Sofiane Hanni in the 49th minute.

This was The Blue Wave’s second successive win and the third of the league this season, leapfrogging them to second place in the standings with a tally of 11 points. Al Khor in contrast are 10th in the rankings with three points having suffered their third defeat.

Gomes struck first, latching on to the ball after a defence lapse and dribbling past a defender just inside left of the box to score a telling opening goal. Gomes had a minute earlier missed on connecting a cross pass from Assal in front of the goal.

Al Wakrah doubled their lead just before half-time when Assal picked on a fine Omar Salah assist to break in from the left and strike from within handshaking distance of the goal.

Al Khor hit back soon on resumption with Hanni producing a spectacular long kick from well outside the box. He was assisted by Yohan Boli.

Minutes later, Boli himself was in the striking range, but his shot went just wide of the left post.

Al Khor seemed set to make a fighting comeback, but Al Wakrah tightened up their defence making it difficult for the opposition to make any further inroads.

For Al Wakrah, Assal midway through the second session made a successful hit after breaking through, but the offside flag was up, and rightly so.

In stoppage time, Boli again came close, but in his bid to beat the defenders could not find the target with the ball going wide of the left post.
