Umm Salal defeated Al Ahli 2-1 in Round 1, Group A of the 2022-2023 season Ooredoo Cup at the Al Wakrah Stadium on Monday.

While Nasser Al Nasr (12th minute) and Ilyes Brimil (44th minute) scored for Umm Salal, Al Ahli’s goal came in the form of an own goal by Umm Salal’s Yousef Omar in the 38th minute.

Al Sadd, Al Sailiya, Al Wakrah and Qatar SC are the other teams in Group A.

Umm Salal were more offensive initially and rightly took the lead, but Al Ahli caught up with them and succeeded in equalizing.

However, Umm Salal gave themselves the advantage of taking the half-time break with a 2-1 lead when Ilyes’ goal stood after a VAR check for offside.

Umm Salal, for whom Brimil and Al Nasr led the attacks, showed more urgency in the second half at the start of which the latter had a goal disallowed through VAR.

Brimil was then thwarted by Al Ahli goalkeeper Marwan Sherif in the 64th minute in a one-on-one situation.

Umm Salal kept attacking and their captain Adel Alawi missed a chance in the 72nd minute as he shot wide of the target.

At the other end, Sofiane Hanni and Fahad Khalfan were ineffective with Al Ahli’s attacks.

It may be recalled that Umm Salal and Al Ahli had faced off in Week 1 of 2022-2023 season QNB Stars League and the latter won by a 1-0 margin.
