Al Shamal defeated Al Wakrah 2-1 in Round 2 (Group A) of the 2021-2022 season Ooredoo Cup at the Qatar SC Stadium on Tuesday.

Mohammed El Sayed (38th minute) and Fahad Waad (81st minute) scored for Al Shamal either side of Al Wakrah’s goal through Ismail Mahmoud (63rd minute).

Al Shamal moved to four points and Al Wakrah remained on three points.

Al Shamal had drawn 2-2 with Al Ahli, while Al Wakrah had beaten Umm Salal 5-0 earlier.

Chances and possession were almost equal in the first half, where neither team made worthwhile attempts, barring the goal.

Al Wakrah’s Ismail Mahmoud, with his shot, and Al Shamal’s Fahad Waad, with his free-kick, came somewhat closest to scoring.

Al Shamal shot ahead as Mohammed El Sayed (Jeddo) headed in a Majed Mohammed free-kick from the left.

Changing ends, the action became more fast-paced and Al Wakrah were more determined of the lot.

The Blue Wave earned a penalty, but Ismail Mahmoud sent his shot against the left post and the ball went out in the 52nd minute.

He compensated for it 11 minutes later by putting his team on level terms. Ismail tapped in the ball past goalkeeper Hassan Idriss after Al Shamal’s Saoud Nasser fumbled with controlling a long lob.

Al Wakrah were on the surge now and Saoud Ibrahim Al Nasr’s goal off Omar Ali’s assist was ruled out after the latter was declared offside while receiving a pass.

Meanwhile, Al Shamal made it 2-1 through Fahad Waad, who pounced on a faulty pass by Omar Ali and slotted the ball home past Al Wakrah goalkeeper Mohammed Saeed.

Al Shamal almost made it 3-1 in the 85th minute, only for El Sayed being thwarted by the goalkeeper.

The closing moments saw high intensity and Al Wakrah substitute Faisal Al Borshaid’s goal in the second minute of five-minute stoppage time was cancelled as he had committed a foul in the process of scoring.
