Al Sailiya were officially relegated to the Second Division after losing 0-1 to Al Wakrah in their final Week 22 match of the 2022-2023 season QNB Stars League at the Al Ahli Stadium on Monday.
Desperately needing a win to stay afloat in the league championship, Al Sailiya were left at the bottom of the standings in 12th position with 16 points (four wins, as many draws and 14 losses).
In contrast, the victory added three valuable points to The Blue Wave’s tally and with 39 points (11 wins, six draws and five losses), they ended up fourth in the table.
The winning strike for Al Wakrah, however, came after a tough battle and late when Mohammed Khaled scored in the 87th minute.
Al Wakrah’s Ismail Mahmoud was shown a red card (90+5 minute).
The absorbing contest was a see-saw battle and seemed headed for a deadlock till Mohammed Khaled found himself in perfect position in front of the goal to deflect successfully a fine cross from Ismail Mahmoud.
It, however, dashed Al Sailiya’s hopes of surviving in the top flight.
