Al Wahda of the UAE defeated Al Duhail 1-0 to win the Challenge Shield in third edition of Qatar-UAE Super Cup at the Al Nahyan Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Friday.
Mr. Hani Taleb Ballan, CEO of Qatar Stars League, and Mr. Abdullah Naser Al Junaibi, Chairman of UAE Pro League, presented the trophy to Al Wahda, who finished in first place, and Al Duhail, who finished second.
Al Duhail were reduced to 10 men early in the match when goalkeeper Salah Zakaria was given the marching orders in the 10th minute after a seemingly innocuous clash with an onrushing Al Wahda captain Omar Khribin.
The Emirati side maximized the opportunity presented by their numerical advantage, upping the pressure on Al Duhail’s defence from then on.
It was therefore no surprise when Khribin gave Al Wahda the lead from the spot in the 29th minute after a goal-bound Guga was adjudged to have been brought down by Al Duhail’s Sultan Al Breik three minutes earlier. Despite protests from the visitors, the penalty decision was made to stand after a VAR confirmation.
Undaunted by the numerical and goal disadvantages, The Red Knights gave a good account of themselves as they matched their opponents toe-to-toe in all departments of the game.
Al Duhail had what seemed to be their equalizer chucked off in five minutes of added time when Adil Boulbina pounced on a rebound to score.
The goal was, however, denied to Al Duhail after a VAR decision by the referee to ensure the match ended with a narrow victory for Al Wahda.
