Al Duhail upstaged leaders Al Arabi 3-0 to close out Week 5 of the 2022-2023 season QNB Stars League at the Khalifa International Stadium on Wednesday.
The authoritative win saw the winning streak of Al Arabi being halted as The Red Knights moved to third spot in the standings with 10 points following their third victory.
Al Arabi remained on top with 12 points after five games. Al Wakrah with 11 points are second.
Al Arabi had an opening own goal to rue early at the start which also upset their rhythm resulting in their first reversal in the league after four consecutive wins.
Abdulla Al Sulaiti scored an own goal in the ninth minute, while Nam Tae- Hee (52nd minute) and Michael Olunga 74th-min penalty) got the other goals for Al Duhail.
With Nam fed with a perfect pass inside the box, Al Sulaiti, stationed to mark the rival player, went for the header, but erroneously sent the ball into his own net.
The disappointment seemed to pull Al Arabi back. They were also held back by a strong four-player resistance in the middle by Al Duhail that blocked off many Al Arabi moves.
Soon in the second half, Al Duhail doubled their tally as Nam headed a superb Sultan Al Breik centre to score gleefully. The goal also saw their coach Hernan Crespo exult from the stands.
Al Arabi now pushed hard to make amends and in the 57th minute came close when Omar Al Somah had a shy at the goal but his kick went just wide of the goal.
Yousef Msakni kept making big efforts for Al Arabi, but the moves could not materialise.
In the end, Abdulla Al Marafi's hand on the ball while being in front of the goal gave Al Duhail another opportunity on a platter. Olunga scored off the spot kick with a left-footer to seal the deal 3-0.
