Lekhwiya lost vital points this evening as Al Wakrah frustrated last season’s champions with a late goal in the dying minutes to salvage a point for the blues.

In the early kick-off the visitors Lekhwiya travelled to the Saoud bin Abdulrahman Stadium to what looked like a relatively trouble free 3 points.

Things seemed to being going to plan for Lekhwiya. The first goal of the night came when some good work by Ali Afif down the left saw him send in a pin-point cross to the far post, Sebastian Soria was on at the other end to receive the ball.  The Qatari striker calmly headed the ball back across the face of goal for the games opener (5’).

This sprung Wakrah into life as they then had a sustained period of pressure but again, as so often this season their final ball was often lacking.

Lekhwiya then made it two as Mohamed Razaq got on the score sheet for the Red Knights, Wakrah’s keeper and defense were not on the same page as they both went for the ball but instead collided with each other.  Razaq exploited the empty goal as he tapped in from close range (35’).

However Wakrah still had some fighting spirit left before the end of the first half and their pressure finally told in the 39th minute. Moroccan playmaker Mouhssine Moutouali sent a sumptuous ball over the top of Lekhwiya’s defence for Ahmad Koheyl to hit on the half volley from the left side of the box. This gave the Waves some much needed impetus as they went in at half time.

In the second half the game really opened up and some last ditch defending kept the score line respectable as both team’s defences were regularly stretched.

Chico Flores came close with a header from a corner but couldn’t keep his effort down and for the home side, striker Saez also had a chance but his shot lacked power.

Then in extra time Lekhwiya wingback Mohammed Abdullahterazor was deemed to handled the ball in the area. The referee pointed to the penalty spot and Al Wakrah’s Moutouali was cool as a cucumber, equalising at the death and gaining his side a vital point against the league’s toughest opposition (92’).
