Al Rayyan holds superiority over Lekhwiya down the years
Al Rayyan holds the superiority over Lekhwiya in their QSL direct encounters, ahead of their much anticipated match in round seven. Both sides have met on ten occasions since the 2010/2011 season, during which Al Rayyan have won five games, Lekhwiya was victorious in four and one tie.
The coming eleventh direct encounter is expected to be very tough and exciting for many reasons especially when this is the first match for Al Rayyan’s head coach Michael Laudrup against his old side Lekhwiya.
Also this match comes after Lekhwiya has defeated Al Rayyan in the final match of Sheikh Jassem Cup at the beginning of new QSL season.
The clashes between both team commenced in the 2010/2011 season, when Lekhwiya defeated Al Rayyan 3-1, while Al Rayyan returned to win the second leg fixture by one goal.
In the 2011/2012 QSL season, Lekhwiya sealed the first leg game 2-1, while Al Rayyan won the second leg match 3-1.
The first leg of the 2012/2013 witnessed Al Rayyan win 3-1, while Lekhwiya grabbed victory in the second leg by three goals.
The 2013/2014 season witnessed the first and only tie between Al Rayyan and Lekhwiya in a goalless draw. But the second leg saw Lekhwiya winning 2-0.
Both teams didn’t meet in the 2014/2015 sports season due to the relegation of Al Rayyan to the Qatar Gas League.
Last season 2015/2016 witnessed superiority by Al Rayyan in both first and second legs by winning 3-1 and 5-0 respectively.
It certainly promises to be a finely poised tie between the two title rivals when they clash on Sunday evening at Lekhwiya stadium.
