Too Little, too late for Qatar SC.
Former QSL champions Qatar SC went down to the Qatar Gas league with a whimper on Friday evening. The Kings just needed one goal to guarantee survival for the 2015/2016 season, as Al Kharitiyat where being soundly beaten by Umm Salal.
Sebastio Lazaroni’s side spurned a host of chances in the final twenty minutes to take the lead, but luck was simply not on the Kings side. Qatar SC will now look to rebuild in the Qatar Gas League, expect a summer of change at the club.
One player that the Qatar SC management must keep is midfielder Emiliano Vecchio. The diminutive Argentine midfielder has been nothing short of a revelation in this stuttering Qatar SC side. His crosses and interplay where a joy to watch against Al Wakrah, it’s a shame he couldn’t inspire his side further and haul his side out of relegation.
Race for the Top Scorer ends in a draw
The much anticipated race for the top scorer at the QFA awards ended in a stalemate at round 26 drew to a close. Both Rodrigo Tabata and Abderrazak Hamdallah ended the QSL season with 21 goals each.
Hamdallah took the lead in the race for the award on Friday evening with a fine equalizing goal against Al Sadd, using the Moroccan’s key attributes of strength and deadly accuracy in front of goal. However Al Rayyan’s talismanic captain struck back with a fine penalty against Al Ahli, although it wasn’t enough for Rayyan to slip to their third defeat since lifting the falcon shield.
The strikers now look to share the coveted QFA top scorer award when the QFA awards roll around at the end of May.
Al Ahli finish strong
Five weeks ago, Al Ahli coach Yusef Adam would have been shocked if you were to tell him that his side where to finish in sixth place in the QSL standings. Ahli were looking at a relegation fight, and many wouldn’t have predicted the fine five game winning streak in the QSL.
Over the run Ahli have beaten the likes of Umm Salal, Lekhwiya and Al Rayyan. All teams who have finished just above the Brigadeers in the QSL standings. Yusef Adam has galzanized his side and recent weeks, and can thank the attacking trio of Mouchine Iajour, Meshal Abdulla and Ndombe Mubele.
Indeed it was Mubele who the star man for Ahli against Al Rayyan, his brace was proved the difference against Rayyan. Yousef Adam's side could be dark horses for the Qatar Cup.
El Jaish grab second
El Jaish took the spoils of second place in an entertaining 2-2 draw with Al Sadd on Friday evening. Sabri Lamouchi’s side has been one of the most consistent sides in the QSL this year. They deservedly grabbed an equalizer through defender Lucas Mendes on the 78th minute.
The result means that Jaish qualify for the AFC champions league for next season. A competition that they are currently thriving in, importantly the result gives them a mental advantage over Al Sadd in their upcoming Qatar Cup clash.
As the solders look to grab domestic silverware this season, they may look to this draw as being an important catalyst.
Important win for Sailiya over a stuttering Al Arabi
Al Sailiya leap past rivals Al Arabi in the final game of the season following a 2-1 victory on Friday evening. The result pushes the Peregrines up to seventh place in the QSL rankings.
The final league table will be good reading for Sailiya coach Sami Trabelsi, whose side endured a torrid 11th placed finish last year.
However his opposite number at Al Arabi, Gianfranco Zola will be disheartened with the final standings. The Dream Team has endured a frustrating season this year, with inconsistent results mixed with defensive lapses of concentration. Bizarrely, Arabi where the better side in this contest, yet still managed to come away with the defeat, head coach Zola must address these issues ahead of the Emir Cup.
