Al Kharaitiyat new coach Amar Osim has been announced today as the February QSL coach of the month. The decision was made by the QSL Football Development department who presented him with the award at the club’s training ground.
The League has outlined a number of key targets for QSL clubs to aspire to and hopefully exceed. With Al Kharaitiyat winning four games and drawing their last, they have been one of the big improvers in the second half of the season. They have moved from near the bottom of the standings up to 9th spot.
Osim, who is new to the QSL having arrived in round 16 of the competition, has rejuvenated a group of players and now the Thunders are on a run of wins. They have won on 3 occasions in the month of February, firstly beating second bottom Al Shahania with a confidence boosting 4-0 win and then making light work of Al Wakrah with a comfortable two nothing victory. Against Umm Salal the Thunders found it tough going but they were able to draw on some reserves to claim a 2-1 win.
The only draw came in the last round where a newly replenished Al Arabi side gave them a scare as they went into a 3-0 lead in the first half hour. But Kharaitiyat bounced back with the final score ending 4-4.
Only Kharaitiyat and Khor remained unbeaten in February. 12 goals were scored by the boys in blue and white, and they conceded just 5 times. This means that in the last 4 games, they scored at a rate of 3 goals per game.
Whilst Kharaitiyat haven’t completely dominated their games in February with an average possession of only 47%, compared to their season average of 45%, they have been very direct, putting the ball into dangerous areas. They have averaged a healthy 35 penalty area entries per game, compared to the QSL’s average of 29
They have also been peppering the opposition goal throughout February, with 15.3 shots taken per game on average - only Qatar Sports Club has had more (16).
Kharaitiyat has also restricted opposition attacks in February, with only 10 shots conceded per game on average. Only El Jaish has conceded less (8.5).
This explains why Hassan Fattah has been in such good form as well, the Jordanian has been getting on the end of a lot of these balls and taking lots of shots for his team.
Osim’s men now have 7 games to try and capitalize on their current momentum as they head into the business end of the season.
