Cheetahs need to sure up defense to realize top four dreams
QSL side Al Gharafa has endured a torrid opening to the 2016/2017 QSL season. The Cheetahs who are under the guidance of head coach Pedro Caixinia have lost twice in the opening two games of the season and are languishing in the QSL relegation zone.
Gharafa where blown away by Al Ahli in the opening game of the season, eventually losing 4-2. Al Gharafa started the tie perfectly opening the scoring on the third minute through Kristian Nemeth. Two quick fire goals from Meshal Abdullah put Ahli ahead in the tie, and the Brigadeers ensured the win with a further two goals in the second half from Mojtaba Jabbari and Firmin Mubele.
Whilst in the second game against Lekhwiya, Gharafa could consider themselves unlucky not to have grabbed at least a point. The Red Knights needed a last minute free kick from Nam Tae Hee to give them the 5-4 victory match in a topsy-turvy encounter. However the fact that the side has now conceded nine goals in just two games will be a real point of concern for head coach Pedro Caixinia.
Deadline day signing Rashid Sumaila will be charged with improving the leaky Al Gharafa backline in the next matches. The Ghahanian international defender was signed from Kuwaiti side Qadsia SC and comes with a solid reputation. Sumalia will have to step up quickly for his new side, especially after the announced the three week layoff of captain Bilal Mohammed through injury.
Young winger Othman Al-Yahri is primed to make an impact at the Cheetahs this term. The 23 year old is in his first full season with Al Gharafa following a loan stint at El Jaish, and has already made two starts for the side. His attacking play was a major influence in the match against Lekhwiya and Al-Yahri will be hoping to kick on, to improve the fortunes of his team.
Qatar international Lawrence Quaye is going into his ninth full season at the heart of the Gharafa midfield and his experience will be vital if the Cheetahs are to push on. Head coach Pedro Caixinia has seemingly found the perfect midfield partner for Quaye in South Korean international Kooky Han. The former Qatar intentional will now have to focus on his defensive duties, in order to help his side.
Al Gharafa will be looking to get back to winning ways when the QSL resumes on the 15th of October. The Cheetahs will be taking on fellow strugglers Muaither at Al Gharafa stadium.
