Encouraging start for Al Ahli
After two rounds of the QSL season, Al Ahli is currently sitting in sixth place in the standings registering one win and one defeat. The Brigadiers will be looking to build on this mixed start under the leadership of new head coach Luka Bonačić.
Ahli flew out of the traps in the opening match of the QSL season, defeating a much fancied Al Gharafa side 4-2 on the break. Goals from Firmin Mubele, Mojtaba Jabbari and a brace from Qatar international Meshal Abdulla was enough for Al Ahli to register an important home win.
It didn’t go all to plan in Ahli’s second game of the season as they were narrowly defeated by Al Sadd 2-1. Ahli found their way back into the tie on the 75th minute through Mubele, however it wasn’t enough for the Brigadiers, who were shut out by the experienced Al Sadd defense. One early point of concern for Bonačić could be how his backline has conceded two goals in each game.
Al Ahli has done the majority of their major transfer business late in the day, with their new signings yet to feature in the first team. However, Ahli have turned to the African market again to unearth a potential gem. Ivorian attacker Yessoh Nguessan comes to the club with a big goal scoring reputation and Ahli management will be hoping the striker is able to settle in the squad like previous signings Alain Dioko and Firmin Mubele.
One Ahli youngster who is set to make an impact will be midfielder Ali Qadri. Ahli’s number ten has been with the club the whole of his professional career and was recently tied down to a new, long term contract. At just 22 years old Qadri has time on his side and the potential to be a major star at the brigadiers.
D.R Congo international Firmin Mubele has started the season in fine goal scoring form, bagging two goals in two starts for the side. Mubele will be charged with scoring the goals for Ahli this season, and has the potential to be one of the leading strikers in the QSL. Luka Bonačić will also be hoping that the pacey striker will be able to stay fit over the season, after missing a large chunk of last term through injury.
Al Ahli will be looking to secure their second win of the QSL season on Saturday the 15th of October when they take on Al Wakrah at home.
