UAE confirmed as Group D winners

United Arab Emirates 3-2 Vietnam
Jordan 0-0 Australia

The United Arab Emirates beat Vietnam 3-2 to confirm top spot in Group D and secure a last-eight tie against defending champions Iraq.

It proved a topsy-turvy encounter at Grand Hamad Stadium. Vietnam twice took the lead, first through Cong Phuong after 24 minutes. The UAE equalised when Hoang Lam put through his own net, but Tuan Anh’s delightful finish in the 68th minute put Vietnam back in front.

However the lead didn’t last long. The UAE drew level for a second time five minutes later when Mohamed Al Akberi scored with a delicate chip. And the Emiratis went in front for the first time when Ahmed Husain Al Hashmi converted a penalty following Luong Xuan Truong’s sending off.

Vietnam were reduced to nine men late on when Nam Anh received his second booking and became the second player to receive his marching orders.

The UAE will face Iraq in the quarter-finals at Grand Hamad Stadium on Saturday, kick-off 7.30pm.

Jordan also secured their progress from Group D after a goalless draw against Australia.

A defensive performance at Qatar Sports Club was enough to extinguish the Olyroos’ hopes of going through to the last eight. Australia were left to rue a disappointing defeat to the UAE in their opening group match.

Jordan will now be aiming to at least equal their third-place finish at the inaugural tournament in Oman and secure qualification for the Rio Olympics. They will face Group C winners South Korea in the quarter-finals, with the match taking place at Qatar Sports Club on Saturday, kick-off 4.30pm.
