Australia defeat Vietnam 2-0.

Australia grabbed their first points of the AFC U23 tournament defeating Vietnam 2-0 at Al Arabi stadium. The Ollyroo’s struck with two goals in each half to beat Vietnam, who have now bowed out of the completion.

Australia opened the scoring through defender James Donachie, his shot just hit the cross bar and went past Vietnamese keeper Duy Khanh.

The Ollyroo’s rightly doubled their lead in the second half when Jamie Maclaren latched onto a good through ball to score from the edge of the six yard line.

With Australia two up Vietnam mounted a brief comeback but Aurelio Vidmar’s side held out for a win. They now know that a victory over Jordan, can all but assure qualification to the Quarter finals.

UAE & Jordan draw.

The UAE missed out on the chance to qualify for the last eight of the AFC U23 Championships with an uninspiring 0-0 draw with Jordan, at Qatar Sports Club stadium.

The first half was one of few chances of note; however the second half saw the Jordanians have the upper hand on proceedings. Striker Baha Faisal’s effort on the 69th minute represented the best chance of the tie; however it was just tipped wide by UAE stopper Mohammed Busanda.

Despite the deadlock, both sides still have qualification for the quarter finals in their sights. The UAE will face Vietnam, whilst the Jordanians will take on Australia which promises to be a fascinating clash for a spot in the last eight of the championships.
