March 2, 2015 Doha, Qatar: Yesterday evening at Al Bidda tower- the home of Qatari football the draw for the third edition of the Workers’ Cup  was held on the 29th floor at 7pm.

Co-hosted by the Qatar Stars League (QSL) and the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SCDL), the draw was carried out ahead of the tournament which is due to start this weekend.

The team captains representing their respective companies were all invited and were eager to see who they would be facing.

Mr. Abdulaziz Ahmed Al-Malki, the QSL’s Community Events Specialist commenced proceedings by welcoming the captains and the media and said, “I would like to thank the SCDL, who are helping us in this joint initiative as well as Al Gharafa Sports Club who are represented today by Mr. Jassim Al Kouraichi the Club’s marketing manager. Of course I would also like to thank QSports who will be assisting with the delivery of the competition fixtures.”

He added, “This tournament is our way of giving back to the community and the people who are all working hard to help Qatar grow and develop.”

He concluded by saying that the QSL takes the Workers’ Cup seriously and wished all the teams luck in the up-coming tournament.”

This year the event will be played over the course of a month, from Friday 6th of March until the grand finale on the 10th of April.

Regarding prizes, the team who finishes in first place will be awarded an amazing 25 thousand Qatari Riyals, the Cup and of course, gold medals. Second place will also see a large sum of 20 thousand Qatari Riyals and silver medals. For finishing in third place, there will be a 15 thousand Qatari Riyal cash prize and bronze medals.

There will also be prizes for the best player, best keeper, top scorer, and the fair play award will be handed out to one team. 

Mr. Abdulaziz Ahmed Al-Malki also pointed out that there will be plenty of prizes for spectators and that they should attend QSL matches to enjoy a whole day of footballing fun, both amateur and professional.

Before the draw itself, Mr. Lucian Maldovian, the tournament official went through all of the rules and regulations, explaining that this year there will be 16 teams who will be divided into four groups. He also pointed out that a number of the matches will be played in the Thani bin Jassim Stadium itself. The final of the Workers’ Cup will also will take place at the stadium.

The draw for the teams was a nail biting affair with plenty of audible groans as well as sighs of relief as the groups slowly but surely started to take shape.
