QSL Champions Al Rayyan started their preseason training camp in Spain on a sour note, losing 3-0 to a Villarreal B-team. Head coach Jorge Fossati was eager to use all of his squad and fielded two separate sides in each half.
Al Rayyan looked solid for the majority of the first half, before Villarreal attacker Carlos Lopez nodded in from a corner on the 42nd minute.
In the second half, Fossati completely changed the side again with a side that included Spainish striker Sergio Garcia in attack. However despite the changes it was the Spanish side that doubled their lead just three minutes from the restart. Carlos Lopez was on hand to grab his second of the tie, with a well-placed shot from just inside the penalty area.
The tie turned on the 71st minute when Al Rayyan defender Younes Yaqoub was shown a red card for a rash challenge. Villarreal immediately took advantage and sealed their win on the 77th minute when captain Carlos Martinez hammered the ball into the net.
Al Rayyan will now return back to training ahead of their second preseason friendly, with the Lions set to face Spanish segunda side Elche in Festa d'Elx summer competition on the 12th of August.
