Honors even between the promoted sides

Relegation threatened Muaither and Al Shahania shared the points with a 1-1 draw in a scrappy QSL encounter on Sunday evening. Goals early in either half from Fahad Khalfan and a Alain Dioko penalty ensured that draw which could be considered vital come the end of the season.

Al Shahania didn't  waste any time in creating chances and registered their first shot in target seconds from the kick-off. Fahad Khalfan latched onto a long ball and produced a fierce shot it was a signal of intent from the Qatari striker

With just three minutes on the clock Igor Štimac’s side drew first blood thanks to a long distance strike from Fahad Khalfan. New signing Rahim Zohaivi won the ball deep in the Muaither half, and passed to Khalfan, his powerful strike arrowed into the bottom right hand corner easily beating Basil Zedan in goal.

Muaither grew in confidence as the first half progressed and began to see more of the ball. January signings Minori Sato and Ahmed Yasin combined well to find fellow midfielder Mohammed Attiyah, unfortunately the shot blazed well over.

Despite enjoying the majority of the ball in the second half,  Muaither did little with their possession, and could of gone into the break two goals down. In first half injury time Shahania striker Fahad Khalfan pouned on a defensive error but his shot flew just wide of Basil Zedan’s goal. Shahania headed into the break with their 1-0 lead.

Phillipe Birol’s side made a dream start to the second half finding a equalizer minutes after the restart. Iraq international Ahmed Yasin was adjudged to have been fouled in the penalty area and the referee promptly pointed to the spot. Muaither captain Alain Dioko was the coolest man in the stadium and slotted away the penalty for his fifth of the season, Muaither had a lifeline in the game.

The tie turned scrappy in the second half with plenty of tough tackles flying in from both sides. Al Shahania closed the game out on the front foot with two chances of note, but crucially couldn’t find the winner. Midfielder Mehrdad Pooladi’s saw his deflected effort loop onto the post on the 80th minute. Whilst four minutes later new signing Jean-Paul Késsé Mangoua smashed the cross bar with a free-kick 18 yards out.
