
That three of the eight games were decided on penalties speaks volumes of the excitement and thrilling action that witnessed in Play-Offs of Sixth Workers’ Cup, played on Friday, 23rd February.
A total of 32 goals were scored in the first knockout stage of the annual football tournament, organised by the Qatar Stars League and sponsored by Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy.
The quarterfinal fixtures, to be held on Friday, 2nd March, are Spartan Ready Mix vs Doha Pest Control, Medgulf vs Al Asmakh F.M., Gulf Contracting vs ALYSJ and G4S Qatar vs Nakheel.
Spartan Ready Mix defeated Shapoorji Pallonji 3-1 in tie-breaker after the teams were locked 1-1 at full time. Spartan Ready Mix went ahead as early as the third minute of the match through Adrew Waled. Shapoorji Pallonji drew parity through Evans Yaw in the 24th minute.
In the tie-breaker, Ato Forson, Isaac Kwaye and Siaka Baloa scored for the winners, while only John Yaw could convert for Shapoorji Pallonji.
The second game too went into the tie-breaker after Doha Pest Control and Trags Engineering played out a 1-1 draw, and the former progressed with a 4-2 verdict on penalties.
Mubarak Haruna’s 11-minute goal for Doha Pest Control was nullified by a 31st-minute strike by Trags Engineering’s Mohammed Yakubu. In the tie-breaker, Patrick Owusu, Francis Quarshie, Isaac Nsiah and Mubarak Haruna converted for Doha Pest Control, while only Francis Lassi and Mohammed Yakubu could find the target for Trags.

AG Middle East edged Medgulf, with Suleiman Adams netting the all-important goal in the 34th.
Al Asmakh F.M. registered the biggest victory margin when they trounced NAAAS 4-0. Shehu Mohammad (10th), Samuel Obida (27th), Tauphic Nasir (29th) and Omosefe Owie (39th) netted the goals.
Gulf Contracting prevailed over Taleb Group 2-1, with Joash Otieno (28th) and David Kwesi (49th) being the winners’ scorers. Jerry Ayitey gave Taleb Group’s reply by converting from the penalty spot in the 36th.
Haruna Abdul and Eric Boateng were the scorers as ALYSJ beat L&T Qatar 2-1. Idrissu Abdul’s goal was the losers’ only consolation.
G4S Qatar blanked AALCO 2-0, while defending champions Nakheel got the better of Mowasalat 4-1 via tie-breaker after regulation time ended goalless. Mohammed Braik, Ange Bengong, Daniel Ondoa and Akram El Hamdaqui found the mark.
The tournament started at the Al Duhail Stadium on Friday, 2nd February. Al Sadd Stadium was the other venue. Matches are played on Fridays and the final is scheduled for 23rd March. Entry is free for the public.
The tournament’s main objective is to promote a culture of sport and healthy lifestyle in the community of migrant workers engaged in various projects across the State of Qatar, especially those related to the infrastructure of 2022 FIFA World Cup.
