Al Wakrah prevailed 3-1 over Al Khor in Week 17 of the 2024-2025 season Ooredoo Stars League at the Al Khor Stadium on Thursday.
The Blue Wave showed fine form as they held sway over the struggling rivals, with Farid Boulaya (23rd and 65th minute-penalty) and Ayoub Assal (29th minute) getting the goals.
For Al Khor, Ricardo Gomes pulled one back in the 52nd minute.
The important win took Al Wakrah’s tally to 20 points, while Al Khor remained rooted in 12th spot with seven points.
Al Wakrah gained the advantage early as Boulaya opened scoring following a fine free-flowing action. From the left, Boulaya made space for himself going over two defenders and the ball hit the right post in the middle before going in.
The second Al Wakrah goal also came through a fast action as Alexander Scholz sent in a cross from near the goalline from the right for a waiting Assal to shoot and beat the goalkeeper to his left.
Al Khor tried to hit back in the second session and early enough Gomes showed his superb individual skills breaking from the right before dribbling the ball to beat a defender. His kick found the goalkeeper's hands on the way, but had enough power to still go in (1-2).
Whatever hopes Al Khor may have had of finding an equalizer were dashed when a goalmouth action found Adil Rhaili making a handball on VAR resulting in a penalty. Boulaya stepped up and struck powerfully to shake the net and make it 3-1 for his team’s sixth win of the league.
For Al Khor, it was their 12th loss in the championship, the most for any team so far, and they are under threat of facing relegation.
