The third round of the Emir Cup witnessed very exciting and surprising results in some of the matches played on Saturday evening, in particular the match between Al Shahania and Al Gharafa which ended in favor of the Oryxes by penalties. Also, Al-Arabi vs. Al-Khor ended in favor of Al-Khor 4-1. Al-Rayyan defeated Al Ahli on penalties after the match ended goaless. In the last game Umm Salal defeated Al-Sailiya by three goals to nil.The most prominent surprise was when Al-Gharafa was knocked out after losing to Al-Shahania. The match ended in a draw 2-2 and the teams had to resort to penalties to determine the winner, Al-Shahania caused another upset surprise after defeating Al-Kharaitiyat in the previous round. With this result Al-Shahania qualified to the fourth round and will confront Qatar SC next Sunday 10 May 2015.
Al-Arabi’s defeat to Al-Khor by four goals was shocking and allowed Al-Khor to progress to the fourth round and play against Al-Sadd on Monday 11 May 2015.
There is no doubt that Al Khor’s confrontation against Al-Sadd will be very tough and exciting, especially with Al-Sadd aspiring to win at least one title this season.
As for the match between Al-Rayyan and Al Ahli it was the newly promited outfit who showed the more positivity. After returning to Qatar Stars League and winning the Qatar Gas title as well getting to the semifinal of the GCC Club Championship, Al Rayyan is heading in the right direction and is now in the fourth round of Emir Cup.
Al-Rayyan scored all their penalties whilst Ahli midfielder Younis Ali missed one for the greens. With this result Al-Rayyan will confront El Jaish on Sunday 10th of May 2015. Will Al-Rayyan continue their successful path or will they stumble before El Jaish?
Finally the defeat suffered by Al-Sailiya against Umm Salal by three goals is a clear indication about the decrease in the team’s performance this season after reaching the final match of Emir Cup in last season. This bad form didn’t occur only during the Emir Cup but also started with instability of the team during the Qatar Stars League.
Umm Salal took a pragmatic approach to their game and succeeded. They will now face Qatar Stars League and Qatar Cup Champions Lekhwiya who will be much tougher opponents for Umm Salal.
