Sebastian Saez was the hero for Al Wakrah as his late strike earned the Blue Waves a 1-0 win over Al Kharaitiyat and helped them leapfrog their opponents in the QSL.

It was a closely contested affair between well-matched opponents at Al Wakrah Stadium. After Thursday’s 6-2 thrashing against Lekhwiya, Wakrah were keen to bounce back and show that result was only a blip. Mauricio Larriera’s men enjoyed the lion’s share of possession throughout, but too often failed to create clear-cut opportunities.

Despite struggling to get a foothold in the game, Kharaitiyat should have gone ahead in the 8th minute. Yahia Kebe met a cross from Anwar Deya, but with the goal at his mercy, he headed horribly wide.

Two of Wakrah’s best chances came towards the end of the first half. Hussein Yasser missed with only the goalkeeper to beat, while Saez failed to connect with an inviting cross.

Wakrah continued to dominate possession in the second half. The home side kept building attacks, while Kharaitiyat waited to pounce on the counter. Wakrah had a goal disallowed in the 63rd minute when Mohamed Mohamed headed the ball in, but he was penalised for a foul on a Kharaitiyat defender.

Despite Wakrah’s dominance, a stalemate was looking likely until Saez finally broke the deadlock in the 82nd minute. Yasser delivered a good cross into the box and the Argentine striker headed into the far corner before celebrating with the entire Wakrah squad on the sidelines.

Amar Osim’s boys will feel frustrated at not earning a draw, but Wakrah were the dominant side and they had a certain Saez to close out matters.

In the early kick-off, Al Sailiya followed up their surprise victory Al Sadd by beating Al Khor 2-0.

A goal in each half at Thani Bin Jassim Stadium secured the points for the Peregrines. Abdulqadir Ilyas put Sailiya in front after seven minutes, while Sayaf Mohsin Korbi scored just after the break.

Khor had 13 shots on goal in the match but only two of them were on target. Sailiya’s two-game winning run, meanwhile, moves them up to 7th in the QSL.
